Sony Clarifying...

We wanted to take this opportunity to clarify a point and answer one of the most frequently asked questions today.

There’s a difference in timing between when we identified there was an intrusion and when we learned of consumers’ data being compromised. We learned there was an intrusion 19th April and subsequently shut the services down. We then brought in outside experts to help us learn how the intrusion occurred and to conduct an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident. It was necessary to conduct several days of forensic analysis, and it took our experts until yesterday to understand the scope of the breach. We then shared that information with our consumers and announced it publicly yesterday evening.

For those who were looking there’s also an FAQ with some more on frequently asked questions
Thank you for your continued patience and support.

Update: Due to ongoing work to bring PSN back online there will be no scheduled content publish this week for PlayStation Store or PS Home. We will resume our scheduled publishing as we bring services online again.

My Interpretation
So basically he's saying; We first had to confirm that our customer's confidential, personal and/or private data is compromised before we could confidently speculate on what has been accessed a week into the investigation,... without ever having thought that a warning sooner might prevent the compromised data being exploited.

Sony can only warn their customers about 'possible' theft once they've eliminated absolutely every other possibility for the intrusion not being a joke by the competition or a friendly voice-chat after office hours.

Great SONY,... Now I'm feeling much better about the 500euros I just wasted!

They simply hoped they could pretend there was no intrusion to spare them the embarrassment! And after a week of trying to figure out why anybody would intrude,... badly enough to turn off PSN for security purposes,... somebody finally figured out that perhaps they shouldn't forget to mention the theft of confidential/personal/private/financial information being out on the market to the highest bidder,... before they get complaints about customers start getting odd credit-card bills.

Guess some important and brilliant director of marketing backwards, figured out that it's probably better to come out, even if somewhat late,... so long it's before customers start throwing stones through Sony's stores and office windows.

Awesome SONY,... I'm really starting to trust you now!
